Duxbury Beach Preservation Society

As the Reservation struggled to repair the beach following the devastating No-Name Storm of 1991, it soon became apparent that its finances were woefully inadequate for the task at hand. At the same time, many residents and non-residents alike were offering to help with the restoration effort. A group emerged and named itself the Save Duxbury Beach Committee. The volunteers offered beach grass and snow fencing certificates, T-shirts, and beach towels in recognition of donations to the Reservation. They also sponsored a beach walk and a huge outdoor benefit dance. The group had to continue its fund-raising activities in the wake of another severe northeaster that washed away the original artificial dune and required construction of a second dune. The public response to “Save Duxbury Beach” was overwhelming and much appreciated by the Reservation.
Once the beach was finally put back together, the Save Duxbury Beach Committee began to discuss the Reservation’s goals to continue restoration efforts, replenish the storm damage fund, and begin long-range planning. Thus was born the Duxbury Beach Preservation Society, a subcommittee of the Duxbury Beach Reservation, Inc., in 1995.
The Preservation Society has a twofold mission: to raise funds for beach preservation projects and the storm damage fund and to educate the public about the importance of taking care of the beach. Its motto is “saving our beach for future generations.”
