Education Night
The Preservation Society, a subcommittee of the Duxbury Beach Reservation, Inc., is presenting Peter Rosen, a coastal geologist and professor at Northeastern University, at Batelle Labs, 397 Washington Street, on Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at 7:30 pm. Dr. Rosen will be speaking about the processes that formed Duxbury Beach.

In 1998, the Reservation hired Dr. Rosen and his associate Duncan Fitzgerald to bury eight 16-foot rods along the beach from the Pavilion parking lot to the Plum Hills. Twice a year, Dr. Rosen and Dr. Fitzgerald collect data from these rods in order to measure the horizontal and vertical movements of Duxbury Beach. Dr. Rosen will also speak of this project and what conclusions he and Dr. Fitzgerald have drawn from the data. We invite you to come and learn more about the past and the future of our magnificent barrier beach. Light refreshments will be served.

“Down by the Sea” ART SHOW
Participants will create images of their favorite aspects of the beach and ocean.

The contest is open to all students from Pre-K through grades 12 and using all types of media including crayons, watercolor, acrylics, drawing, and photography. We are encouraging ALL children who love the beach to participate in this contest. One masterpiece will be chosen for the program cover for our education booklets distributed in Chandler School, and other art works will be published on our website www.DuxburyBeach.com. Winning art work may need to be modified to fit the size of the booklets: 4 3/4" wide by 7 5/8" high (vertical orientation).

Please submit your art work at the Duxbury Free Library by dropping it into the box outside the Children’s Room by Friday, February 13, 2010, and contact Tammy@DuxburyBeach.com if you have any questions. Just include a cover page with the artist’s name, age, contact information (email, address and phone number), and the name of the work of art.

Mark your calendar for our first Art Show on Saturday, February 27, 2009 from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm in the Merry Room of the Duxbury Free Library. Please join us for refreshments and view our gallery of artwork from all the submissions. The winners will be announced and awards will be given at 11:00 am. Happy Creating!
