Big Beach Needs Big Help
Duxbury Beach has always been one of the greatest attractions of our town!
“Big Beach,” as we call it, is where
- families and friends from near and far gather for picnics, cookouts, and campfires.
- children are able to explore and enjoy nature’s playground with parents and grandparents.
- everyone can swim, walk, throw a Frisbee, fly a kite, or read a book through a long summer afternoon.
Duxbury Beach is one of the primary reasons many of us moved to this beautiful town and is no small factor in the value of our properties today.
Now, Big Beach, the slender arm of sand we love so much, needs us… Needs ALL of us to make a commitment.
The new and VERY serious threat to Duxbury Beach is rising sea level. Add storm frequency, volatility, and monthly flood tides, and the risk of this fragile barrier breaching escalates significantly, resulting in severe flooding to homes and businesses along Duxbury’s coastline.
Based on detailed research and discussions with many experts, Duxbury Beach Reservation, Inc. (DBR), the non-profit organization that owns Duxbury Beach, has determined that raising the entire dune structure by 2.8 feet at a cost of $5 to $6 million is the best way to strengthen our beach and prevent coastal flooding.
Last fall DBR announced a major fundraising effort, and to date we have received several meaningful gifts. We ask you to join us in our campaign to protect our coastline and preserve our beautiful barrier beach.
Please say “yes” when you receive a request for your help. Donations are 100% tax-deductible. For additional information, call Margaret Kearney (781-934-2907) or Ken Johnston (781-934-6741).
